SO much has happened since we last connected. Namely…
I bought a HOUSE.
It feels totally surreal to be a first-time homebuyer and to check off a life goal that’s held dear by so many.
To be honest, a few years ago, this would have been IMPOSSIBLE. My credit was poor behind immaturity and bad decisions, my job history was unstable because I hadn’t “found myself,” and my income was miniscule.
But embarking on my Salesforce career path got me to my dream house faster than I ever dreamed possible–and it can help you achieve your goals too (house or otherwise). Here’s a few keys from my journey.
I unlocked my earning potential
The first and most solid leg up I had was a stable income. When I was in marketing, cobbling together my livelihood with odd jobs and gigs, I couldn’t imagine having the income to be confident in my ability to save for a downpayment and maintain a mortgage, insurance, taxes, repairs and improvements. But by choosing a career as a Salesforce professional, I was able to quickly boost my income to levels that made it feasible to purchase a home. In doing so, I got to bypass the need for incremental pay raises in another industry or working 3 jobs to be able to afford homeownership.
I invested in my future
One of the BEST pieces of advice I got when I started my first full-time Salesforce role was to have a portion of my check automatically deducted into savings. I did this, and had the savings go to another bank that wasn’t as easily accessible. Because I was already used to living on so little, the additional income I was saving wasn’t included in my monthly calculations–ever. This is how I was able to build up my downpayment fund and still enjoy day to day life. But making that sacrifice paid off when I didn’t have to get any help, from anyone with my downpayment.
I had a gameplan
Lenders typically look at your last 2 years of financial history for mortgage approval. Once I got into my Salesforce career, I realized 2 years would pass before I knew it, so I had better get a plan in place to purchase my home. I began to pay off old obligations, pay current ones on time, pay closer attention to my credit and secure a real estate team to guide me through the process. The mortgage/homebuying process follows very specific steps: get pre-approved, find a home, make an offer, get a home inspection, get final approval, clear underwriting, go to closing, get your keys! My plan allowed me to always know what the next step was, and it was simply a matter of time before I crossed the finish line and the threshold of my very first home.
I’m not telling you any of this to brag, simply to celebrate with you and share what got me to this point. But also to share that these are the same concepts you can use to land your ideal Salesforce job.
